Nuclear power plants have been in operation in Switzerland for over 50 years and currently generate a third of the country's electricity - reliably, resource-efficiently and with low emissions. The Beznau nuclear power plant with its two reactor units (KKB1, KKB2) has been in operation since 1969 and 1971 respectively. In 1979, the Gösgen nuclear power plant (KKG) in Niederamt in the canton of Solothurn was connected to the grid, followed by the Leibstadt nuclear power plant (KKL) in 1984. The Mühleberg nuclear power plant, which has been in operation since 1972, was decommissioned in 2019 and has been in the process of being dismantled since then.
Production, availability and trends of nuclear power plants
Net production and heat extraction
The KKB decouples heat for the benefit of Regionalen Fernwärme Unteres Aaretal Refuna. The KKG supplies process heat to two industrial companies located in the vicinity of the plant.
Time availability per year
The nuclear power plants carry out a so-called annual main inspection every year, whereby they coordinate with each other in this regard. The maintenance work usually lasts four weeks per plant and takes place in the summer half-year.
Time availability last 3 years
The nuclear power plants carry out a so-called annual main inspection every year, whereby they coordinate with each other in this regard. The maintenance work usually lasts four weeks per plant and takes place in the summer half-year.
Net production of nuclear power plants
Monthly net production of nuclear power plants
Scheduled maintenance takes place every year during the summer months. These are deliberate interruptions for the purpose of maintenance.
Production since commissioning of the nuclear power plants
KKB supplies more than 2,600 connections in industry, commerce, public buildings and private households with heat via the Refuna district heating network. Around 4,000 households with almost 15,000 residents benefit from the heat extracted by KKB.
