Swiss nuclear power plants – pillars of supply security

Nuclear power plants are a cornerstone of Switzerland's electricity supply: they safely and reliably provide around one-third of the electricity produced in Switzerland – around the clock, in summer and winter alike. With production costs of between four and six cents per kilowatt hour, nuclear energy is one of the most cost-effective methods of electricity production in Switzerland.

Swiss nuclear power plants and Nuclear Valley

The Swiss nuclear power plants are located along the rivers of Nuclear Valley. For decades, they have been reliably producing electricity for three million people and are an important pillar of Switzerland's energy security.

Nuclear Valley is also home to the headquarters of key players in the Swiss electricity supply sector, the central interim storage facility in Würenlingen, the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Villigen, and the offices of Nagra and swissnuclear.

Swiss nuclear power plants: Experienced and innovative

Swiss nuclear power plants have a wealth of experience in reliable electricity production over the past decades. All of the plants are in long-term operation and are constantly being kept up to date with the latest technology by their operators. This means that, in addition to the maintenance that is essential for the safe operation of the plants, innovations and optimizations continue to be made even after more than 40 years of operation.

It is not only the PSI researchers working in the field of nuclear energy who are innovative in Nuclear Valley, but also the Swiss nuclear power plants. The integration of new technologies, systems, and programs into nuclear power plants, which are subject to the highest safety requirements, is an exciting and challenging undertaking. In addition to the use of drones and robot dogs to monitor the condition of high-tech equipment, topics such as the use of generative artificial intelligence are also at the forefront.
