What will happen to the thousands of metric tons of material generated during the decommissioning of the Mühleberg Nuclear Power Plant?
A large portion of this is processed and reused—the decommissioned Mühleberg nuclear power plant achieves a recycling rate of over 90 percent. Sara Kotnik, a waste management specialist and hazardous materials officer for radioactive shipments, also contributes to this effort.
Sara has been working at BKW since early 2023 and ensures that materials from the decommissioned nuclear power plant are properly disposed of, processed, and—where possible—returned to the material cycle. In this interview, Sara talks about her day-to-day work and how the decommissioning of a nuclear power plant can be carried out in a sustainable manner.
